The following differential interviews for telepathic, clairvoyant, and psychic empathic experiences were developed by Theresa M. Kelly, MsD., were utilized in private practice, an can be utilized as clinician-rated/assisted self-reports, informant-reports, or clinician-reports that can assesses veridical (i.e. real) extrasensory phenomenology against well-known symptoms of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. These measures were designed to assist clinicians in identifying veridical extrasensory experiences versus purported extrasensory experiences with psychotic features.
These measures are partly inspired by the Telepathy & Paranormal Interview (TPI) developed by Greyson (1977), an open-ended 25-item interview given to all patients admitted into psychiatric services at the University Of Virginia Hospital during a 3 month period. The TPI is comprised of 8 questions to assess the extent of psychic experiences, 8 questions designed to elicit Schneider’s first rank symptoms of schizophrenia related to paranormal experiences (i.e. auditory hallucinations somatic hallucination, passivity experiences, delusional perception, and thought withdrawal, insertion, and broadcasting), and 8 questions from the MMPI F Scale (Validity Scale), and 1 screening question for the study that inquiries into the patient’s claims of telepathic ability. The results of this study found that Schneider’s first rank symptoms discriminated schizophrenics more reliably than other paranormal experiences. In addition, schizophrenic patients subscribed to each of the MMPI F Scale items more frequently than non-schizophrenics.
Frequency of Use
These measures were designed to be utilized during psychological or psychiatric intake to assist in determining the best course of patient treatment. These measures are not designed to track change in psychotic symptoms over time, but may be useful for this purpose.
