Definition of a Mental Disorder<\/strong>
\nAccording to the DSM-5: \u201cA mental disorder is a syndrome characterized by clinically significant disturbance in an individual\u2019s cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior that reflects a dysfunction in the psychological, biological, or developmental processes underlying mental functioning. Mental disorders are usually associated with significant distress or disability in social, occupational, or other important activities.\u201d The DSM-5 continues by stating: \u201cAn expectable or culturally approved<\/span> response to a common stressor or loss, such as the death of a loved one, is not a mental disorder. \u201c<\/p>\n

Extrasensory Experiences & Psychopathology<\/strong>
\nWhile some extrasensory experiences may present similar features to mental disorders, such experiences should not be automatically associated with known psychopathology. Because of this, psychic experiences should be classified and addressed in a different manner than mental disorders. Today, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders<\/em> includes a non-pathological category titled \u201creligious and spiritual problems,\u201d V62.89 (Z65.8) to classify psychic experiences.<\/p>\n

\nThe importance of differential diagnosis is evident when extrasensory experiences are reported by individuals with a current diagnosis or history of mental disorder (e.g. psychotic or dissociative disorders). The importance of differential diagnosis is equally as essential when extrasensory experiences are reported by individuals with no history of psychiatric illness.<\/p>\n
