OUTPUT – HISTORICAL SHIFTING<\/strong><\/h2>\n

What was described in the last class is an example of present probability shifting, but there is also what\u2019s called historical shifting<\/strong>. This gets even weirder because quantum mechanics is by its very nature \u201cabsurd.\u201d In the case of the baseball, right before you hit the ball, each possible event (#1,2,3,4) all existed as possible events, as probabilities.<\/p>\n

Well, after you hit that ball, that event was set in history, and we cannot change the past right? WRONG!<\/strong> Historical probability shifting can happen, and therefore, someone in the present can alter the past. In this case, you may have hit that ball in the infield, but after you hit the ball you can shift that event to hitting it into the outfield, striking out, or hitting a foul ball.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>This weird effect can be better understood in a study where students were given a list of words to remember and then given a surprise recall test to list the words they remembered. Then, a computer selected some of the words at random and the students were asked to practice those words by typing them over and over again. The result of this study was that the words the computer choose at random, the practice words, were recalled more than the words the computer did not select in the surprise recall test.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/em>So wait, let me get this straight, if I take a test in school and didn\u2019t study well enough for it and think I might get a bad grade, I can just go home and study for it and I\u2019ll get a better grade?<\/em>\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\"\"<\/a>Since effects like this (retro-active or retro-casual<\/strong> priming and reversed rehearsal) are fairly new topics, and we don\u2019t yet entirely understand them and how they work yet. So don\u2019t worry if it doesn\u2019t make any sense now, it probably never will entirely, but we will talk about this more later on in the book just to give you a better understanding of what may be going on.<\/p>\n
